Sometimes when you use your debit card, the merchant will put a "freeze" on money in your account to make sure you have the funds to pay for the transaction. That means your $5 cup of coffee may "freeze" $35 for up to three days in your account, and the $20 stop for gas may "freeze" $50 or more for the same amount of time. When you also consider that deposits don't always clear immediately, you've got a recipe for potential "non-sufficient funds" in your account, even when you have plenty of money available.
